The Innovative Devices Access Pathway (IDAP) is currently in its pilot phase. IDAP has been designed to accelerate the development of innovative medical devices where there is currently an unmet need in the NHS.
Specific eligibility and innovation criteria needed to be met for successful entry to the IDAP pilot. There is a list for the eligibility criteria and 4 detailed IDAP pilot criteria included in the pilot phase. The criteria will be updated following the completion of the IDAP pilot. More details can be found here.
The IDAP partners comprise of the following organisations:
- Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)
- Health Technology Wales (HTW)
- Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
- National Health Service England (NHSE)
- National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
- Office of Life Sciences (OLS)
- Scottish Health Technologies Group (SHTG), part of Healthcare Improvement Scotland
Eight innovative technologies have been selected to take part in the pilot. Patient experts have been involved in the shortlisting and selection for the pilot phase. The applicants will receive support from a team of experts from across the IDAP partners at key stages of product development. This will help the applicants develop a product specific Target Development Profile (TDP) roadmap which will define Regulatory and Access touchpoints across the product development.
A few touchpoint examples where support can be provided are:
- system navigation advice
- a fast-tracked clinical investigation review
- joint scientific advice with partners

The TDP defines a pathway that enables direct interaction with IDAP partners in an innovative approach allowing safe, timely and efficient generation of evidence. The evidence can then support both regulatory approval and Health Technology Assessment (HTA) of innovative medical devices.
Through the pilot phase IDAP will seek the lived experience of patients and the public to support the development of innovative devices.
The learnings from the pilot will feed into building the future IDAP as well as feeding into the government’s Medical Technology Strategy. I look forward to hearing about the outcome and learnings from this exciting pilot.
